Think of the Heavenly Stems (top row) as your 'Outward Appearance'—what the world sees and how you behave publicly. Think of the Earthly Branches (bottom row) as your 'Support/Environment'. The 'Hidden Stems' (Cang Gan) are the 'Private Realities'—your true internal motivations, secret talents, and untapped potential.
Are they powerful? Yes, but in a different way. An element that is 'hidden' is protected. For example, hidden wealth is often easier to save than wealth that is 'exposed' (which attracts competitors). Hidden elements only become 'active' and visible to the world when a passing year or 10-year Luck Pillar 'clashes' or 'combines' with them, effectively pulling them to the surface.
Understanding your hidden stems helps you recognize why you might feel different internally compared to how people describe you. They are the 'roots' of your tree; while people admire the leaves (stems), the strength of your life depends on the health and quality of these hidden roots.
